The wish of a German psychiatrist and his wife, an Italian pastry-cook, and a ballet dancer from ex-Yougoslavia to become Swiss, serves to tell the story of suspicious Swiss agents as to their worries about iwhether these people can become "proper" Swiss. With humor and perspicacity this film amuses and informs.

Switzerland, but which Switzerland ?

Our members and friends have questions about Switzerland, country in which we are living, where our children go to school, often we are dealing with administrative matters or simply by curiosity. Which is the answer to people who are commenting : Switzerland ? Oh yes, cows, chocolate, cheese, banks and watches ! Yet, forgetting the clichés, which are the skills of Swiss people ? How did they face the crisis of the Swiss watch industry ? Do we know that for three consecutive years Switzerland came first, worldwide for research ? In which fields ? Come to learn and to share your exprerience.

Organisation : three seminars of one and half hour, the first one will take place in the Villa, on February 16th, at 02.30pm.

Some history, Institutions, politics : direct democratie, referendum, etc. A biblography (English/French), films to share - the first one on Febr. 7, The Swiss Makers (see cine-club), some books to read, and still more.

Collections of glass

The Ariana Museum in Geneva is currently showing a collection of twentieth century Venetian glass, consisting of bowls, vases and dishes dating from 1920 to 1990. Hundreds at a time were produced of most of these models, but these pieces from the hands of glassblowers are all unique. Along with this collection of classic pieces of Venetian glass, the Ariana is also exhibiting the works of two internationally renowned glass makers: Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin. Together they have explored the techniques of glassmaking and have developed a fascinating aesthetic of form and colour refined by closely controlled light. The works exhibited are for the most part very unusual: a monumental boat 9 metres long loaded with amphorae and other objects; vases decorated with patterns sculpted on the wheel; clusters of spheres in shimmering colours in the form of mobiles, fixtures or chandeliers and finally, groups of rectangular sculptures in organic form, extolling the incredible elasticity of glass.

The Siege by Ismail Kadare

We are in the 15th century. An Albanian citadel is besieged by the Ottoman army, one of the most feared armies of the time. The fate of the commander-in-chief, Tursun Pasha, is closely related to the outcome of this assignment, which involves subjugating the Albanians. Could he win against people who never submitted to servitude and therefore were ready to defend their citadel to the last soldier?
